Old York Road in Wandsworth Gets Permanent Improvements
Old York Road Gets a Clean New Look
In the heart of Wandsworth, you’ll find Old York Road, a road that the community holds dear, due in part to its individuality. Recently, The Go-Gum Group have helped with the project to re-invent and re-shape this cornerstone of Wandsworth Town Centre.
In 2020 Wandsworth Council began to explore opportunities for re-appropriating the space on Old York Road, to develop a public realm that better represents how people want to visit and use Old York Road. The scheme was spurred on by a temporary pedestrianisation trial which was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, and which gave an opportunity to reimagine Old York Road.

The Old York Road Improvement Scheme began in earnest in September 2024, following public consultations and successful planning consent. A key element of the scheme was new, improved paving being introduced along Old York Road, maintaining an even surface for pedestrians. Vehicle access arrangements would be limited to business deliveries, with pedestrians and cyclists given priority, to aid in retaining its charm and appeal to locals and visitors alike.
Go-Gum Group’s subsidiary Surface Solve Ltd, working in conjunction with Wandsworth Council, undertook a post construction deep clean of the new paving, then protected the new surface with Pave-Saver.
The Surface Solve Ltd team worked together with officials from Wandsworth Council, who supported our Street Cleaning Team whilst they were on site, allowing us to work uninterrupted on the cleaning and pavement protection processes. Our Street Cleaning Team ensured that all new paving areas directly outside shop frontages, were deep cleaned as early as possible, so as to avoid unnecessary disruption to those shops and businesses located on Old York Road.

Whilst one Street Cleaning Team operative, using a state-of-the-art Go-Gum Lanceman DiBO street cleaning machine, took care of the construction dirt and grime, a second followed on behind, applying our unique Pave-Saver paving protector.
Pave-Saver protects surfaces from the menace of discarded chewing gum and helps them remain clean by repelling water, airborne dirt, acid rain, smog, industrial pollutants, oil and grease, dust and organic growth (lichens & moss).
Commenting on the project, Rob Dixon, Managing Director of the Go-Gum Group said: “This was our first time working for Wandsworth Council and it was fantastic to collaborate closely with them. Their assistance allowed us to streamline our on-site operations, concentrating solely on the post-construction cleaning operations and pave-saver application. In total, we cleaned and protected 981m2 of new paving for the Old York Road Improvement Scheme.”
