Eastern City BID Commissions Go-Gum Group to Deep Clean and Protect Historic City of London Alleyways

Ancient Alleyways of the City of London Deep Cleaned and Protected with Pave-Saver

Tucked away behind the grand facade of Cornhill in the City of London lies a network of narrow, historic alleyways that have served the Square Mile for centuries. St. Peter’s Alley, St. Michael’s Alley, Castle Court, Ball Court and Bengal Court are among the most characterful pedestrian passages in the capital, used daily by the thousands of workers, visitors and residents who populate this part of the City. When Eastern City BID commissioned the Go-Gum Group to deep clean and protect the paving across this unique collection of alleyways, 774m² of City of London paving restored to its very best.

Eastern City BID works to improve the environment, safety and experience of the streets and spaces within its area, and the condition of the alleyways off Cornhill was a priority for the organisation. Heavy footfall from the City’s working week had taken its toll on the paving, making a thorough deep clean followed by a lasting protective treatment the ideal solution.

To carry out the deep clean, a team of two operatives equipped with a Go-Gum Lanceman DiBO street cleaning machine worked methodically through each of the five alleyways, lifting ingrained dirt, grime and chewing gum deposits from the paving and restoring a clean surface ready to receive treatment.

With the deep clean complete, two full applications of Pave-Saver were applied across all 774m² of cleaned paving. Formulated to penetrate deeply into stone and masonry surfaces, Pave-Saver creates a long-lasting barrier against water, oil, grease, airborne dirt, organic growth and discarded chewing gum, invaluable for City of London paving where heavy footfall resumes at pace every Monday morning.

All works were carried out over a single weekend in May 2026, taking advantage of the significantly reduced footfall the City experiences on Saturdays and Sundays, minimising disruption to local businesses and residents whilst allowing the team to work efficiently across all five locations.

Commenting on the project, Rob Dixon, Managing Director of the Go-Gum Group said: “The alleyways off Cornhill are genuinely special places, full of history and character. Our team relished the challenge of working through five separate alleyways over a weekend and the results were excellent. With Pave-Saver now in place, Eastern City BID can be confident that these historic passages will remain clean and welcoming for a considerable time to come.”
